Enclosure 3 transcribes a sonar operator’s log during an unexplained subsurface contact, South Pacific:

“…contact is not evading, it’s circling. Okay, this is going to sound wrong on tape. It isn’t hunting us. It’s reading the hull. Like it’s checking who we are. Contact lost. Contact lost.”

The archive’s interest is confined to one line of the medical annex, in which a crewman under sedation repeated the sentence. He was not, at that time, a registered carrier. He is now.

In plain words
In 1997, a sedated sailor repeated a sentence he had never heard. It was first written on a clay tablet 5,800 years earlier.
Readings · how 3 of the five doctrines interpret this record
The crewman did not remember the sentence. He received it. Sedation lowers whatever normally keeps the channel closed.
“Checking who we are.” A census, not an attack. The custodian verifying its files against the living. It has always used the water for this.
In nine traditions the serpent examines and departs. It examined and departed. At some point coincidence becomes attendance.
